How do you file a Textual DP?

Asked by: 2407 views Instrument Rating

I have been given an IFR clearance many times at non-towered airports where they gave me a quick "as filed". I have gotten this through an FSS so I wasn't able to ask a controller directly. Are they assuming vfr conditions and that I'm doing a vfr climb on course, that I'm flying the published visual departure procedure (if applicable) or are they assuming i'm flying the textual DP. I'm never sure if i'm able to go into actual conditions until i'm established on my cleared route, and I don't have radio communications with ARTCC until well after i'm on my route.

Thanks everyone

You don’t file a textual DP, just your route. Part 91 pilots may follow the DP before turning on course or they may depart directly on course. Usually the latter is done if you are familiar with the airport and can maintain your own separation from any obstacles. If you do a Visual Climb Over the Airport (VCOA), you are required to notify ATC of your choice before departure.

I’ll add, you are able to go into actual immediately (legal but not necessarily smart). You have your clearance and vanilla Part 91 pilots are permitted 0-0 takeoffs. The only real assumption ATC has is that you will be responsible for your own terrain and obstacle separation.

In terms of filing, while there is no requirement to do so, I would indicate my intent to fly a particular departure procedure, say an ODP, in the flight plan comments.
