CFI Renewal questions

Asked by: 3805 views , ,
FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor

I have a CFI, CFII & MEI rating, in addition to my ATP with SEL, SES and Instrument. My CFI expires in July 2018. If I get me Multi Engine Sea rating will it renew ALL of my CFI Ratings?  I am trying to decide whether to do the 2 day CFI refresher course or just add a rating that I would like to have anyway.

Also, will the MES rating be added to my ATP or my Commercial privelages?

A rating added to a pilot certificate does not renew a flight instructor certificate. You already have an Airplane Multiengine rating on your flight instructor certificate. There are not separate ratings for land and sea.

If you pass the practical test for the MES using the ATP PTS, it will be added at the ATP level.
If you pass the practical test for the MES using the Commercial PTS, it will be added at the Commercial level.

Given your existing CFI ratings, the only way to renew your CFI certificate using the provisions of 61.197a(1)(ii) (passing a practical test for an additional flight instructor rating), would be to pass a practical test for one of the following:

    CFI – Rotorcraft-Helicopter
    CFI – Instrument Helicopter
    CFI – Rotorcraft-Gyroplane
CFI – Powered-Lift (good luck finding one!)
    CFI – Glider

I believe those are the only remaining CFI ratings left for you. Of course, all of those would require you to first have the underlying Commercial or ATP certificate for that category (and class) of aircraft, so, probably a bit more than you’re looking to do before July. Though any of them would be a lot of fun.

FIRC would seem to be the most reasonable method for you.

Hi. Thank you for your response. Yes given this info I agree. I will be contacting American Flyers at PMP to accomplish that. I DO appreciate your help.
