Missed Approach Turn

Asked by: 4350 views Airspace, FAA Regulations

Precision Approach:  If no altitude is specified when to commence a turn in a missed approach, at what altitude do you turn? Perhaps 400 AGL of which fits the standard profile for SIDs and ODPs? Non-Precision Approach:  If no altitude is specified when to commence a turn in a missed approach, at what altitude do you turn? Perhaps 400 AGL of which fits the standard profile for SIDs and ODPs? Thank you for the feedback.

Every airfield where trainers or fighters fly they have a circuit pattern for take off and landing. ATC gives the missed approach height keeping safety margin in hand. You start to turn at beacon passage but height is as per local LOP/SOP

If the missed approach calls for a turn, there will be a climb to altitude on the chart before commencing the turn. If there isn’t an altitude specified, then you may turn right away.

Hey Dan? Are you the same Dan Chitty who’s flying in the Winston-Salem area? I’m out of KTTA.

    Precision Approach:
Before executing a turning maneuver, first proceed to the Missed Approach Point (MAP) at or above the DH, set the right pitch and thrust, then execute the turn.

Note: ILS MAP is at the DH if you are on the glide-slope. If you have leveled off well above the DH, then in this case your MAP is the Middle Marker (The amber light).

    Non-Precision Approach:
Same above except to the Missed Approach Point (MAP) at or above MDA.

Note: you don’t have to wait till 400 ft (this is applicable to takeoff only).
