Converting North East Co-ordinates to a GPS Fix

Asked by: 4400 views General Aviation

I have the following coordinate supplied as a VFR reporting point:-

031449N 1014255E

I am trying to figure out how I would enter that as a custom waypoing into a GPD which requires the data input as Long / Lat (DDMM.mm)

Thanks

I am assuming your format is ddmmssN dddmmssE where d is degrees, m is minutes and s are seconds of arc.  In many GPS units, you can change the format of the expected lattitude-longitude to match one of three formats.  If this can’t be done and you need to convert from  ddmmss to ddmm.mm: there are 60 seconds in one minute so divide the seconds by 60 to arrive at a decimal of minutes. So 49/60 = .82 and 55/60 = .92, making 03 14 49 N 101 45 55 E the same as 03 14.82 N 101 42.92 E.
