Changes to CFI practical test

Asked by: 4920 views , ,

I have heard that the FAA has refocused the CFI practical test to be much more focused on scenario based training. Is this the case and any suggestions for preparation?  finally, will the PTS be changed to reflect this?

The FAA and it’s designates conduct practical tests according to the appropriate PTS. If they do not then you can challenge the test (and good luck with that!).

The 2006 CFI PTS discusses scenario based training and the DPE handbook covers scenario based training and testing in some depth. So if the question is “did the 2006 revision add more focus on scenario based training” then I don’t know – but I *think* that when I took my CFI checkrides there was not as much mentioned about scenario based training (but my memory is not everything it should be).

I can’t find any more current direction to DPEs to focus more (or less) on scenario based training.

In the end it doesn’t matter. FAA inspectors and DPEs are humans, and they all have their pet focus areas. So if your local examiner is focusing on scenario based training then you would best be prepared for that.

The PTS does not need to be changed to allow for testing on scenario based testing – it’s in there already.
