How to renew my CPL license?

Asked by: 9172 views Commercial Pilot

Hi, i stopped flying since 2008 till recently i've been bitten by the flying bugs again. I graduated from flying school in late 2003. Ever since i stopped flying, i never renew my CPL license. I am planning to be a pilot again but i just don't know what i should do in order to get my license back. Does this include going to flying academy again?

    Follow these steps:
Renew your 2nd Class Medical with a medical examiner.
Go with an instructor and start flying again and eventually do a “Flight Review” (used to be called Biennial Flight Review.
Keep polishing up your instrument flight(if so rated) and go for an “Instrument Proficiency Check.”

You should be good to after that!

What country was your license issued in? Charles has provided information for a US license, but we don’t commonly call it a CPL. In my experience, people who say CPL have a UK or ICAO license.

Hi, thanks for the responses. It was issued in Malaysia. One of my concerns is whether i have to spend another 14 months in flying academy just to get it renewed. Thanking you guys in advance.

You should contact the aviation authority that issued your CPL.  In the USA, we don’t have pilot licences that expire, we have certificates that have no expiration date. With a US Commercial Pilot Certificate, all one needs to do to be able to exercise it is to have a second class physical that meets the requirements of 61.2(d) , meet the currency requirements of 61.57, and if necessary meet the flight review requirements of 61.56. So if you had a US Commercial Pilot Certificate, and had not flown in over two years, you would need a current second class physical, pass a flight review and if you want to exercise your instrument rating privileges also pass an Instrument Proficiency Check. In addition, you must be current in the category and class of aircraft in which you wish to utilize your commercial certificate.

Thanks for all the feedbacks. They were fast. Will definitely check with the Department of Civil Aviation here. Thanks again.
