Time limitation between ground school endorsement and taking IFR knowledge exam?

Asked by: 9921 views Instrument Rating

Hi,

Is there a limitation on how long an IFR ground school endorsement is good for (i.e., do you have to take the knowledge exam within a certain time period after you finish ground school)?

Thanks

There is no time limitation on the knowledge test endorsement.  Theoretically, you can receive the endorsement 10 years before you actually take the test.  I wouldn’t recommend it though.  The questions are updated all the time and if you wait long enough, the knowledge test area could change as well.

    You can also use:

Certificate of graduation or a statement of accomplishment certifying the satisfactory completion of the ground school portion of a course from a FAA certified pilot school within 60 days from date of graduation. (14 CFR § 61.71 (a))

Note the 60 day limit. The wording of your question doesn’t lead me to believe this applies in your case, but for completeness.

I’d also note in reference to Wes’s response – there is no reason why you should not have a 10 year old endorsement but have obtained the knowledge required to take the current test – having the endorsement doesn’t mean you stopped learning.

Most CFIs by me who give endorsements nowadays including myself i put a time limit on my endorsements so we no longer have to worry about that whole 10 year endorsement deal. i limit no longer then 30 days from my endorsement. Some ground schools do 60 days, but i would bet nowdays its going to be more of the 30 day deal.
