Helicopter CFI add-on question

Asked by: 1198 views FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor, Helicopter

Hello,

I recently got out of the military and am looking to get my helicopter CFI add-on. I already have my helicopter commercial and instrument ratings, 930 helicopter hours including 300+ as PIC. I recently took the MCI test and obtained my fixed-wing CFI. What additional steps would I need to take to obtain my helicopter CFI?

Can you qualify based on having been a military helicopter instructor?

As Kris asked, can you qualify based on military qualifications? Were you a military Instructor Pilot in Helicopters or an Pilot Examiner in Helicopters? FAR 61.73(g) covers the requirements to be issued a CFIs for military IPs and PEs.

If not, FAR 61.183(f), (g) and (h) lays it out. Pass the Flight Instructor-Helicopter Add-On Aeronautical Knowledge Test, receive an endorsement from a CFI-Helicopter that you have the required training and are prepared to pass the Practical Test, and then pass the CFI-Rotorcraft-Helicopter Practical Test (Add On requirements listed in the PTS) administered by a DPE-FIE-RH.

Thank you for the references, I’ll check those out. I don’t have a specific designation as a helicopter instructor in the Navy, instructing just falls under the umbrella of Aircraft Commander in the Navy, whereas other communities have a specific instructor qualification in the fleet.

Since I did technically instruct and issue gradesheets to junior pilots, I’m wondering if I were able to obtain copies of some of the gradesheets I gave as an instructor if that might suffice to get my CFI since I don’t have a specific instructor designation in my NATOPS jacket.

Grade sheets won’t do it. You need the documentation listed in 61.73(g)(3).
