Hi,
I am hoping someone can kindly clarify what the term "for hire" means in FAR 91.205(b)(12) (the requirement to carry a flotation device when operating the aircraft "for hire" over water beyond gliding distance to shore):
If I hire an aircraft from a local flight school and fly alone in the aircraft for my own pleasure (and not for compensation), does that trigger the requirement in 91.205(b)(12) to have a flotation device onboard?
My interpretation is that 91.205(b)(12) would NOT apply in this scenario as I am not flying for hire. However, the chief pilot at the flight school says that if I "hire” the aircraft for my own personal use, the FAR definition of "for hire" applies, and I would be required to carry a flotation device in the aircraft according to 91.205 b 12.
I hope someone could please confirm if this would indeed be the case as it doesn’t sound logical to me.
Thanks!
