CFI expiration date

Asked by: 1068 views FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor, General Aviation

Hey gang,

I am in the process of starting my CFI renewal training this month.  However, although my "date of issue" for the flight instructor certificate says "2 Sept 2021", the expiration date on the back says "30 Nov 2023".  I thought my CFI certificate was to expire 24 calendar months after it was issued?  Do I really have until Nov to finish the training?

Thanks!

Adam

Read through 61.197. Your expiration month stays the same as it was last time, as long as you complete the renewal paperwork within 3 months preceding the expiration date. Which means you can do the FIRC, etc., up to 3 months early and it doesn’t change your expiration month.

So, I assume in 2021 your CFI certificate expired in Nov 2021. You did the FIRC or some other method of renewal in September, or likely in August. The new certificate was issued on 9/2/21, but since it was within 3 months, the same November expiration date was kept for 2023.

Which, if I’m correct in my assumptions about you situation, means that yes, you have until Nov 30 to renew your certificate – and that’s what it says anyway.

(And the expiration date you should have been using when you sign logbooks has been Nov 2023.)

I agree with Russ. I completed my renewal this August (2023) and my CFI expiation date is September. I did look at my last plastic CFI cert and it shows an “issue date” in August 2021, which is when I completed the FIRC, and an expiration date of 30 September 2023.

You can check with the FAA Pilot Registry and look yourself up. It will show your current status and the expiration date for your CFI. One point, the information may run about 2-3 months behind. My latest renewal has not been processed by the Airman Certification Branch AFS-760. Once you see that the Pilot Registry shows your “new” certificate’s issue and expiration date, AFS-760 has processed it and your plastic one will be on it’s way.
