Can Multi xc time be used for single engine time for commercial

Asked by: 844 views Commercial Pilot, FAA Regulations

Started my multi training & ran out of money before check ride completion. I did all xc flights 2hrs 100nm day & night duel & 300nm (solo) with instructor on board (babysitting). After running out of money I decided to get my commercial single (cheaper).
My question is can the xc times i did in the multi training be used for the xc times required for the single engine rating? I figure the answer is no but would like to still confirm.

By reading 61.129 closely you will have the answers.

If the regulation requires time “in an airplane.” then the flight time in any airplane will qualify. If the regulation requires time “in a single engine airplane.” the the flight time must be in a single engine airplane. If the regulation requires “training time”, then that flight time must be with an appropriately qualified CFI.

61.129(a)(2) requires 100 hours PIC, (i) 50 must be in an airplane. (SEL or MEL work)
61.129(a)(3) has several training requirements… (i) 10 hours in a Single Engine Airplane. (ii) requires 10 hours in a complex, turbine or TAA airplane (MEL does qualify). (iii) and (iv) both require a 2 hour cross country in a Single Engine Airplane. (v) requires 3 hours prep in a Single Engine Airplane.
61.129(a)(4) has solo requirements and all are in a Single Engine Airplane.

And as far as the “performing the duties of a PIC”. All of the 10 hours must be either solo or with a CFI NOT providing any instruction. This time should be documented in your logbook with the reference that you were using this provision. You may NOT do part solo and part “performing the duties”, it’s an either/or situation.
