Flight review

Asked by: 1611 views FAA Regulations

Let's say I got my ppl on 2018 June, so my flight review has been expired 2020 June. But got into instrument training on 2020 May and finished the training and passed checkride on 2021 January. In this case, is it legal? Can I take checkride without flight review?

If the examiner agreed to be PIC for the practical test, passing the practical test would comply with 51.56(d)(1). However, one could not fly solo to the test location if it were different than where the aircraft was based. As a practical matter, I would expect that during the instrument training, an instructor could sign off a flight review, with little if any extra flight time.

Showing up for an instrument checkride without a current flight review could lead to a whole line of questioning by the DPE. It could even lead to the checkride being terminated because DPEs are advised not to act as PIC on checkrides. AsJohn said, your CFI and you should be catching that and ensuring you are current.
