Can a CFI teach a CFII

Asked by: 2099 views Flight Instructor, Instrument Rating

I was flying as a safety pilot for a friend that wanted to practice instrument approaches. We’re both CFI’s and are both about to take the CFII checkride. She had a little bit of trouble on a couple approaches, so I was giving her some advise as she was flying and she said that she’d like me to sign her logbook. I can’t tell if I’m legally allowed to do that since I’m not a CFII. Do you have to be a CFII to teach another CFII? I’m also not signing her off for the checkride.

Assuming that your “giving her some advice” falls within the scope of a full period of instruction, then yes. However, it does not count as part of the 15 hours of instruction from a CFI-I and it would be a good idea to review that with her when you sign her logbook.

Chapter and verse is 61.195(c)(1). In order to “conduct instrument training for the issuance of an instrument rating…the flight instructor must hold an instrument rating…on his or her flight instructor certificate.”

So like KDS said…you can sign it as instruction given, but she cannot count that instruction as part of the required instruction for any rating involving instruments.

Was there not just a confusion about signing, versus the name of the safety pilot? (61.51)
