Helicopter CFI add on Fixed WIng CFI

Hi,

I am a helicopter CFI, and I am looking to add on Fixed Wing CFI. Is there anyone who can give me some advice on the process?

Do I have to get fixed-wing PPL first? ( But fewer flight hours) just like a new student pilot then IR-CPL-CFI.

Or I can directly work on Fixed-Wing CPL, then CFI?

Does anyone have the same experience and can share their story?

You are already a certificated pilot so you will never be a student pilot again (unless you get your certs revoked for some reason–let’s not go there). What you can do is add categories and classes to your certificate. So 61.63 is your friend there.

As for adding fixed-wing to your instructor certificate, 61.183 is your list of requirements. You will already have satisfied many of them so you just have to fill in the gaps.

61.183(c) says you have to have a commercial (or ATP) certificate with an aircraft rating appropriate to the instructor certificate sought (use 61.63 to get you there) and instrument rating. 61.183(f) says you have to take the FIA knowledge test (you won’t have to do FOI because you already hold an instructor certificate). 61.183(h) makes you pass the practical test. 61.183(i) makes you get a spin rating or do the practical in an aircraft where you can do it as part of your checkride. And 61.183(j) makes you have 15 hours PIC in the category and class appropriate to the instructor rating sought.

    Good luck!
