Emergency fire extinguisher

Asked by: 3039 views FAA Regulations, General Aviation, Private Pilot

I was reading 91.513 about required emergency equipment and it states that a fire extinguisher is required for all aircraft. I recently rented a 1964 c172f that doesn't have one , is there something I'm missing? I was wondering if maybe ots not required based on the year? Not sure where to find that information at if thats the case though

91.513 is in subpart F which only applies to “Large and Turbine-Powered Multiengine Airplanes and Fractional Ownership Program Aircraft”.

In other words, that reg doesn’t apply to a 172.

    Hit submit too early. Whoops.

If you look at 91.501 you can see what type of operation require compliance with 91.513

So just to clarify, there is no regulation that requires standard category general aviation aircraft to have a fire extinguisher? I have also rented a couple of Da40 and they have them aboard behind the seats.

That is correct. As EAD pointed out, in part 91 light aircraft there is no FAA requirement to have a fire extinguisher. The reg which you referenced applies to Large Turbine Powered Aircraft (91.501), also part 135 requires a fire extinguisher. HAVING a fire extinguisher is a good practice and knowing how to use one is an excellent idea.

FAA AC-42D goes into the FAA’s methods and requirements for portable fire extinguishers. The AC states that while it is not specifically directed at part 91 operators, it will give guidance to 91 operators about approved extinguisher types.
