LPV IAP

Asked by: 2025 views Instrument Rating

Hi,

Since LPV is not a precision approach I got a Q: is it a mandatory to fly glidepath or I can do step down?

For LPV, ILS, and LNAV/VNAV approaches, you are not required to follow the glidepath unless you are flying the approach to those DA minimums.

If you want to ignore the glidepath on an LPV approach, then fly the step-downs and do not descend below the LNAV MDA minimums (LPV minimums are not authorized if you’re flying it as an LNAV procedure). Your missed approach point shifts as well – instead of DA being your missed approach point, there is a defined point that will be your missed approach point (usually the runway threshold).

For Instrument Proficiency Checks and training purposes, an LPV approach can count as a “precision” approach, but the only reason it’s important to know that an LPV approach doesn’t count as a precision approach is when you’re considering your alternate minimums. Standard alternate minimums are 800ft ceilings and 2SM visibility for non-precision approaches, and they are 600ft ceilings and 2SM visibility for precision approaches. LPV would fall into the 800/2 category of standard alternate minimums.

If you’re equipped with a WAAS GPS, you can optionally plan to fly a GPS or WAAS approach at both your destination and alternate, but if you’re flying with a regular GPS (non-WAAS), you can only plan to use a GPS approach at either your destination or the alternate, but not both.
