Hello All,

I was wondering if I should take a checklist or the revision guides to my first flight lesson.

Thanks in advance,

Luke

It should not be necessary as that is part of the aircraft. Just enjoy the experience and let the instructor guide you through that first flight.

KDS, I agree that it’s not necessary to bring a checklist to the first flight lesson (unless of course one was provided in some kind of a “starter kit” the school provides). The CFI will provide and there’s nothing to worry about.

However, the implication that “a checklist is part of the aircraft” is a bit misleading. Yes, the POH is required to be in the aircraft and usually has a checklist in it. But an easier-to-use checklist (commercially-produced or homemade) like most of us use isn’t necessarily a “part of the airplane”. I’ve flown many places where you will want to, and often need to, bring your own checklist. One place specifically said “there’s usually one in the plane, but you’ll want to bring your own. They tend to disappear.”

Russ, the checklist is a required part of the POH. On very rare occasions, I’ve seen people use it when they could not find the checklist. Imagine a flight school without checklists where a student shows up for his first lesson and someone says to him “You did not bring a checklist, we can’t fly today.”
