Multi Engine Rating

Asked by: 1617 views FAA Regulations

I am a recreational, instrument rated private pilot looking to get my ME rating. Once I obtain my ME rating do I need an endorsement or sign-off for each ME aircraft I'd like to fly (MTG<12,500 lbs)? Or, if I get the ME rating in a Diamond, can I fly an Aztec the next day without an endorsement.  I would engage a MEI to gain experience in the Aztec.

Thank you, RF

FAA does not require any additional endorsements to fly other Multi-engine aircraft less that 12,500 lbs. However, most rental companies will require something like 10 hours (or more) experience in make and model to meet their insurance requirement. And if you buy one you will have similar insurance requirements.

Your question is not completely clear. For anyone else looking for a similar answer…

A Recreational Pilot may not add a MEL rating. This would require an upgrade to a minimum of a Private certificate.

The Checkride would therefore be for Private & MEL in the case of a Recreational Pilot.

Finally, some ME types have engines rated at 200HP or less. An endorsement would be required to act as PIC, of this had not already been completed during training.

Some Aztec (and Seneca) models are at 200HP only.

The OP is a “recreational, instrument rated private pilot”. Since a Recreational Pilot also can’t have an instrument rating, I’m pretty sure he or she means lower-case “recreational pilot”, as in one who flies for fun, for recreation, and capital “Private Pilot”, as in the rating.

I will admit I have caught myself trying to use “recreational” pilot to mean “hobby” pilot and make myself find some other term for it due to just this situation.

Regardless, it doesn’t matter if they’re flying for a hobby or to help them in their business, or whatever, Mitch has the right answer above.
