Student PIC while receiving Dual Instruction

Asked by: 2268 views Student Pilot

As a student pilot receiving dual training with a CFI, can I log PIC??   It appears the answer is YES, per FAR 61.51 (e)(iv)(D)(4).  Is this true, with the CFI entering and certifying my logbook?

However, the document below references that student pilots have no rating yet, and would not qualify with PIC under FAR 61.51 (e)(1)(i).

FAR 61.51 (e)(1)(i) and (iv)(D)(4).

Trying to understand, Thanks,
Caden

No. As a student pilot, you are not yet rated in any category and class of aircraft, therefore you cannot log PIC.

Note that 61.51 (e)(1) only applies to “sport, recreational, private…” pilots, of which you are not one yet. So nothing in (e)(1) applies to you.

(e)(4) is the subparagraph that applies to student pilots, and notice that it requires all three conditions (use of the word “and” at the end of (ii) – be solo, be endorsed for soloo, and be in training.

I can’t find an “(e)(iv)(D)(4)” as you mention, but I suspect this is covered above. For reading the regs, I recommend you use an alternate site such as https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/61.51
as the alignment and layout (like indenting subparagraphs) makes it much easier to read.
