ATP-CTP or Not

Asked by: 1744 views
FAA Regulations

I'm currently wanting to take my ATP written and practical and have passed my ATP written in 2011.  My question is that although my written has expired and I need to retake it do I now have to complete an ATP-CTP course before I take the knowledge test again or do I not because I have an expired ATP written?

I do not believe so as long as you can still produce the CTP certificate.

There was no requirement for CTP when you took your ATP written in 2011 however that written test expired. Holding an expired written test means nothing. You will have to complete CTP in order to that the ATP knowledge test.

61.153(e) is pretty straightforward, that’s your reference.

Thanks, everyone for your comments…I was trying to avoid the ATP-CTP at all cost.

My error. I read the original question as saying the CTP had been taken previously and the knowledge test subsequently expired.

The phrase “at all cost” is quite appropriate. It’s a lot of money.

I think it will be very interesting to watch the percentage of airmen who hold ATP with multiengine ratings will drop. A lot of people got the rating for bragging rights and never used it. The cost of bragging has gone up.

The original question doesn’t state ATP multi-engine or ATP single-engine. It’s my understanding that the ATP-CTP is only required for ATP-ME ratings. A quick read of FAR 61.153(e) says multi-engine or concurrent with a type rating and says nothing about single-engine.
