How to introduce SRM

Looking for guidance on how best to weave SRM (Single Pilot Resource Management) into my curriculum for PPL training.  Do other CFIs make it a "thing" in a lesson?  Or just discuss the elements of SRM through all their lessons? Or a hybrid? Thanks in advance to taking time to share how you teach SRM.

    Like much of flight instruction, it’s situational. Also like much of flight instruction, it’s best discussed on the ground first. Then look for “teaching moments” where it fits in with the situation. You can also set them up during other times. Cross-country would be a good time to bring up “what if” situations.

    As usual, the FAA has a bunch of acronyms. IMSAFE, PAVE, DECIDE, 5 Ps, etc, etc, etc. For better or for worse, a pilot is gong to be asked questions to determine whether the pilot understands and can apply SRM principles (whether or not they memorize the acronyms).

    I would start the discussion with a homework assignment – read PHAK Chapter 2 (https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/phak/media/04_phak_ch2.pdf)

    Weave the principles into the lessons. Do a “pilot preflight” as well as an aircraft one. Place things we do – preflight inspections, run-up, clearing turns, carb heat as a preventive in older Cessnas, even lessons on stalls (how distraction can let it get away from us), in a risk management context. Get the new student thinking of activities as always entailing some level or risk and the steps we take to mitigate them.
