Reinstate my CFI

Asked by: 2063 views Flight Instructor

It’s been expired 20 plus years ago. Now retired and would like to do it part time. Do I need to take the written test over again? How about the spin endorsement and the part to demonstrate complex airplane, Like to just take a DPE up for the maneuvers and do the oral test,,,,   Thanks

Start with reading 61.199 for the requirements.

Reinstating a CFI is relatively simple. A lot of instructors who have gone onto full time flying jobs keep renewing their CFI because they remember that test as being extremely painful and don’t want to go through that again. The truth is it’s very simple.

Look at the CFI PTS (FAA-S-8081-6D) and find the table that is labeled “Renewal or Reinstatement of a Flight Instructor Table: Airplane Single-Engine Category”. Those are the only tasks you are required to demonstrate. Of course, the examiner can ask for more, but the odds of that happening are very slim.

The answer to your question about a complex airplane is that it will not be needed for the test. That is a relatively recent change.

Good luck, and please come back and tell us how your experience went and what you learned from it.

The easiest way to reinstate your CFI certificate it to add a rating to it. If you only have a single engine CFI certificate, then consider adding multi engine to it. That will reinstate your privileges for both single and multi engine after passing the MEI checkride.
