Power-Off 180 Landing

Asked by: 2345 views General Aviation

Looking for some Power-Off 180 landing tips...

When to turn base, final...

When to extend flaps...

how high on final...

how far from runway on downwind...

I know the major key here is wind... but if anyone has any "rules of thumb" for factoring in "wind" to the judgement of the maneuver.

what are you performing it in? If you are using an Arrow, you can try throwing a brick out the window then following it down 🙂

For me, turn quickly and steeply when you need to turn (keeping your best glide) and get level as quickly as you can to minimize sink on base, and the same on final – you don’t want to spend any more time in a turn than you have to.

When to turn is a judgement call – for me I kinda mentally line up the stripe on my wing tip with my intended point, then judge the wind based on the effort it takes to keep that lined up.

When to extend flaps – when you are sure without a shadow of a doubt that you will make your point. You can always do it without flaps, but you can’t get there if you put them out too soon.

How high – better to be on the high side, you can slip if you need to.
How far from the runway – I do tend to make it a bit closer so if normally i have my wingtip stripe lined up, on a power off 180 I will line up with my fuel cap (piper cherokee or arrow). But that’s just a starting point and you need to develop the judgement, that is the final piece.
