CFI Initial practical test – log as dual given?

Asked by: 3014 views FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor

Hopefully this isn't a dumb question, but I thought I read somewhere that your CFI Initial flight test (if passed) counts for my first couple hours of given dual instruction (since the DPE is not acting PIC or whatever).  I'm not finding that again, so not sure if I understood that correctly.

Not a big deal in the scheme of things, but want to be accurate.  Passed mine yesterday, my brain is still swimming haha!

thanks,

Adam

    First and most important, CONGRATULATIONS!

As to if it can be logged as dual given, I’ll say this. If it can be logged as dual given, I’ve never seen it done that way and I’ve never heard anyone saying it could be done that way.

Beyond that, if you are giving dual instructions, you are required to make a notation in the student’s logbook. I just have a somewhat comical vision of a newly minted CFI telling the examiner to give him their logbook so he could log the dual given and the examiner reaches over and tears up the temporary certificate.

But, I’ve been wrong before and if I’m wrong this time, it will just be another one in a long list.

Thanks, yeah I didn’t think so but was one of those things I heard floating around and thought I had better ask. Google wasn’t really my friend in this case, and I couldn’t remember where I had heard it. That IS a comical vision 🙂

I would think since you had not yet “earned” the certificate until you had temp cert in your hands, you are not a CFI during examination flight.

    Congrats!

I’ve heard that as well. Just like when you pass your PPL checkride, you can log that as PIC time. I would just leave it normal… One+ hour of dual given won’t hurt you.
