PROCEEDING BEYOND THE IAF

If cleared to fly a STAR that ends at a IAF, what is expected upon arriving over the IAF and an approach clearance or any other clearance has been issued?

From my IFR training days I remember that in such a case entry to the published holding is expected and if no holding is published a right hand holding pattern is to be entered until approach clearance is received. Is this still applicable under FARs or ICAO rules?

    If your current clearance limit is still the airport, you would proceed to your clearance limit and would not descend. If the clearance limit was amended to be the final fix in the STAR, you would hold at the limit. But, before reaching the IAF, you should request instructions from ATC so this is clarified.
