Asterisk altitude on approach plate

Asked by: 7707 views Instrument Rating

The RNAV (GPS) RWY 3 into Flagstaff has an additional altitude of *8160 (Underlined and Asterisk) after the Final Approach Fix. When/What is this for? It seems related to the *0.9 NM to RW03.   The equivalent Jepp chart shows a note 2 but there is no actual note.

*8160 is connected to the note ‘*LNAV only’, which is under the missed-approach graphic boxes. If shooting an LNAV only approach, you would be at 8700 at the FAF, descend to 8160 until passing YEDUV, then descend to 7360 assuming that is not adjusted for some reason (ex: notam, weather, lighting equipment out).

It’s standard notation on approach plates which have both nonprecision and precision/APV minimums to indicate a step-down which applies to the non-precision-APV approach. You’ll see them on ILS approaches with LOC minimums as well. Take a look at the ILS or LOC into the same airport.

On the FAA chart, the explanation for the asterisk is in the profile view for both.
