Initial Turboprop Training

Asked by: 1811 views General Aviation, Private Pilot, Student Pilot

How does a pilot transition from piston training/certification to turbine (prop or fan) training short of having a good pal with a Pilatus or TBM that's willing to put hours on the aircraft for training? Where's the gateway to that world??

There really is no one single path. It all depends on where you are and who you’re working for. If there is any key it’s to not get stuck in a path that doesn’t go anywhere. For example, there is nothing in the world wrong with working as a flight instructor for a school with a dozen Cessna 172’s, but if you stay there beyond a certain point, you’re spinning your wheels.

A lot of jobs depend on networking. Aviation is more that way than most. Combine that with actively searching for that job that has the move up potential.

Of course, with enough money, you can do a lot of things and buy a lot of ratings that would make you more attractive to an employer.

Get your commercial and instrument tickets, and find a commercial operator running 208 Caravans (or something similar) and see if you can get them to hire you.
