Flat tire awareness

Asked by: 1915 views Aircraft Systems

The other day after a normal lesson in a Seneca, I noticed the nose wheel was leaking air while we pushed the plane into the hangar. I’m thankful I did not have to land with a flat tire, but I started to think about what that would look like.  Then I wondered if you would even be able to tell if it were flat or not.  I always check the landing gear lights and look in the mirror to visually see the nose wheel. Does anyone think you would be able to tell if the tire is flat?  Does anyone have any experience with flat tires and a view of the tire in flight?

I can’t ever recall a flat tire issue happening to me or someone around me other than finding a tire flat when I walked to the airplane. However, if you Google a bit you’ll find several items in that area including that same question being asked on this website back in 2012.
