I was asked by a controller if I was equipped with TCS. I said no. And he said “k”

    You got me on that one. To me, TCS means Touch Control Steering. It’s a way to take control of the airplane from an autopilot, make a change, and then give it back to the autopilot. However, I can’t imagine ATC being interested in that.

    I’m not a CFI but here is my guess. Depending on local accent, he might be saying TCAS (“tee-kas”).

    You may have misheard the controller. He may have been asking about TCAS, TCAS is a Traffic Collision Avoidance System. It is pronounced Tee – Cass so could easily be heard incorrectly.

    That’s what I was thinking at first, but he had no accent and I even asked him to repeat himself once, and he was definitely not saying TCAS. Maybe he meant to say TIS, which the C172 I was flying actually was equipped with. For some further context, he asked me this as I was being vectored around a jump zone, so I suppose it would make sense if he were asking about some sort of traffic advisory system
