Maybe I need to rephrase my question, is a basic medical acceptable for taking a commercial check ride?

No, as Kris pointed out there is a requirement to have at least a Third class medical for a practical test. Also look at 61.23 a3 that also mentions the need for a third class medical for practical test. There are no provisions currently for basic med to qualify you for a certificate. Basically it allows you to exercise the certificate you currently hold with the restrictions that apply to basic med. For the commercial certificate, the only commercial type activity allowed on basic med is flight instruction, so you would at some point need that second class medical to conduct commercial operations. Hope this helps,

Based on your rephrased question, it appears that according to 61.23(a)(3)(iii), you may take a practical test for recreational, private, commercial or ATP using basic med.

You just have to ask the right question.

I didn’t see Jay’s answer when I was typing my last response. 61.23(a)(3)(iii) references operations under 61.113(i). That is the wording allowing Basic Med.
