LNAV MDA not authorized – NOTAM

Asked by: 2900 views General Aviation

So, if you see the above text in the NOTAM and the approach contains only LNAV and Circling MDA(H), are we still allowed to fly the approach and circle to runway but not straight in for runway ?

I am confused folks..

Connor.

Good question. What airport is this and what does the exact verbiage say in the NOTAM?

That’s the right question from Anderson. But if I can take a WAG, connor, you may be confusing a “straight in approach” with “landing straight in.”

I’ve seen similar NOTAM from time to time, usually specifying that straight in minimums (doesn’t have to be RNAV) are not available, often due to some nearby construction – cranes, etc – poking into the LNAV minimums protected airspace.

If that’s what you are talking about, all it means is you can’t use the straight in minimums and you may only descend in instrument conditions to circling minimums.

But here’s the thing – once you get to those minimums, the choice is your =how= to circle (subject to the traffic pattern rules and any prohibition on circling in a certain area). “How” to circle, with respect to any circling approach’ includes going straight in if you can do so with normal maneuvering.
