Special Thanks to John and Mark, I want to doublecheck wordings before I go on my rental flight today.

 

so, involving lateral guidance on final approach course during FINAL SEGMENT(from AC90-108) must be available, operational, tuned, identified, and monitored - does this mean I have to change my CDI mode to VOR and fly the approach, correct?(Only during final segment according to text in AC90-108??)

    You did not specify the avionics that you are flying with, but regardless, you need to have one CDI or RMI indication of the raw VOR data with the correct radial dialed in. This must be in your primary view so it can be monitored. The correct frequency needs to have been entered and the ident confirmed. The VOR must be in service without NOTAM.
