Sight seeing in Brave airspace

Asked by: 2084 views Private Pilot

I've flown through and into Brave airspace many times, but it was always to a specific airport; either in or across Class B.

I want to take a friend on a sightseeing flight into Bravo around DFW.  Is there a specific request when I contact approach for clearance into Bravo?

We are looking to do a night flight around downtown.

Thanks in advance.

You might consider calling the TRACON a few hours before and explaining what you are wanting to do, where, when, and what altitude you would like to do it at. They will be able to tell you if it will be a problem with their flow and could suggest better alternatives if there is a conflict.

I would expect your initial radio call to go something like this.

You: “Regional Approach, Bugsmasher 12345, [X] miles [Direction] from [Airport or navaid] at [Altitude], request clearance into the Bravo for sightseeing around downtown at [Requested Altitude]”

They’ll probably ask a few follow-up questions, like how long you’ll be there, and may ask you to advise before turning certain directions. If they can’t accommodate for some reason, they’ll just say “Unable”.

This will not be an unusual request for them.
