Requirements to start a US citizen under Part 61 for a CFI

Asked by: 2295 views FAA Regulations, Student Pilot

CFI question for a CFI

I am a current CFI but have not done any instruction since 1990 except for a few Discovery flights last year and a flight review for a PP.

I have a potential US citizen student who owns his own C150. Is there any TSA type paperwork required to get him started? He already has a medical/student pilot certificate. IOW what do I have to do to start training him? I'm sure the answer is somewhere but I can't find it. Most of it seems to pertain to foreign students.

Thanks.

49 CFR 1552.3(h) is what you are looking for. It requires you as the flight intructor, or a flight school to verify citizenship. You can verify the documents and keep copies on file, or make an endorsement in their logbook.

FAA will consider you a flight school. You will need to document annual TSA CFI awareness training. And document that each of your student USA citizenship.
