CFI Add-on ratings knowledge test

Asked by: 4840 views Flight Instructor

I currently hold airplane CFI, CFII and will be adding commercial helicopter followed by CFI/CFII helicopter.  Do I have to take the Flight Instructor Helicopter (added rating) HFA knowledge test and the Flight Instructor Instrument—Helicopter (Added Rating) HIF knowledge test?  I can not match the information from the FAA website section on knowledge tests with the FARs.  Please help.

I believe you are asking about which regulation requires you to take the test.

61.191 deals with additional ratings and states that you must comply with the eligibility requirements in 61.183, but to not have to repeat the FOI test.

61.183 (f) requires you to pass a knowledge test appropriate to the rating sought. Since you already have a Flight Instructor certificate, you may take the add-on tests.
