Minimum Equipment for PP Practical Test

Asked by: 2212 views Aircraft Systems, FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor, General Aviation, Student Pilot

My plane does not have a working VOR indicator. Can I take the practical test without one? I do have a Garmin 155XL in the panel. Thank you.

The Private Pilot ACS does not specifically require the use of a VOR receiver on the test. Rather, it refers to an “electronic navigation system”. Certainly the 155XL meets that requirement. You must be able to navigate using it, including selecting a course, etc. Same stuff as you would need to do with a VOR receiver. This is in VI.B.S1 and the subsequent skills.

I would make sure to let the DPE know this before the test, just so there are no surprises.

If you have a VOR system installed but it just isn’t working, you will need to have taken proper 91.213 actions regarding disabling/placarding/removal/etc (as appropriate) of the equipment.

Your CFI should be able to help you with all of this.
