VOR RWY 24 BOWMAN FIELD (LOU)

Asked by: 2150 views FAA Regulations

The VOR approach chart for KLOU reads: "VOR RWY 24". In the plan view is printed: "RADAR REQUIRED". So... can I fly this approach without DME? If so how would I identify the FAF or HEVOP? When can I begin my descent to the MDA? Thank you!

On this approach, there isn’t a FAF, only an IAF and a PT. HEVOP is optional and requires DME. If you have DME, you can step down to the lower MDA of 1000 feet, otherwise you must use the 1360 MDA. HEVOP does not have radar indicated on it so it may not be identified by radar and the note for the HEVOP FIX Minimums has (DME Required).

So you can fly this approach with or without DME, but DME enables you to use the lower HEVOP MDA.
