Check Ride Discontinuance

While doing a Private Pilot Checkride and there is a mechanical discontinuance after 95% completion, how should the students log book be endorsed?   I, the student will have a couple lessons before the completion of the check ride.

    Be endorsed by whom?

    The DPE should have given you a letter of discontinuance outlining which tasks you successfully completed. He would not have endorsed your logbook for anything.

    If your instructor gives you dual instruction, he should enter the dual given in your logbook the same as he did for any other dual given.

    You did not fail the test, so there is no need for a 61.49 endorsement.
    If your other endorsements have not run out (over 2 calendar months old), then there is no need for them to be repeated.

    I think the confusion for the OP is just the result of it being his first checkride, and not knowing that the DPE doesn’t have to provide any endorsement or signature in the logbook at all, regardless of whether the applicant passes or not.

    Some DPEs sign the logbook, but it’s not “dual instruction” so there’s no real need to. If they do, it’s just a courtesy thing – maybe they write “PASSED!” like mine did. But there’s no requirement, and many of my checkrides have no DPE signature by them.

    After all, the checkride will just be logged (in typical mass market logbooks) as “ASEL”, “PIC”, and “TOTAL” with a little bit of “SIM INST” in there too.

    So Kris’s answer about what the DPE WILL sign and provide is correct, but that’s all you get.

    From the 8900.2A regarding recording the results, the DPE is directed to either:

    \”Sign an entry in the applicant’s records after the practical test. That entry must show the type of test, the duration of the flight portion, the unsatisfactory outcome of the test, and the designee’s designation number.”

    or

    \”sign an entry in the applicant’s logbook or training records after the practical test. That entry must show the type of test, the duration of the flight portion, the successful outcome of the test, and the designee’s designation number.”

    Well, I learned something today!

    Unfortunately, that “something” is that the 8900.2A has to be the most confusing document written.

    Chapter 7 has sections for each type of rating (Sport Pilot, Private Pilot, etc.) Under most of them, it does have the verbiage Kris copied. However, under the Private Pilot section, Section 8 starting on page 7-66 (current Change 3), it does not. In fact, it appears to missing whole paragraphs of stuff that are in the other sections. It’s weird.

    The wording in the other sections varies, too. For example, under the Sport Pilot (section 7), and at least one other, it says “should” sign the records. In some of the others it simply says “sign” it.

    Regardless, I’d say about half of my checkrides have some kind of signature, the other do not. It might even not be that high.
