Composite flightplan how do we file it?

Asked by: 5876 views Commercial Pilot, FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor, General Aviation, Instrument Rating

I have gone through AIM 5-1-6 and understood the comcept behind it.

But I would like to know how to fill out the form, especially the route section of the FAA flight plan form.

You can’t file a composite flightplan in the US. You need to file two flightplans, one for the VFR portion and the other for the IFR portion. You need a clearance for the IFR portion and need to activate and close your VFR portion.

So, does that mean I have to look up and file full route between point A to B for both IFR and VFR or routes that is connecting ?

If you call an FSS briefer, they will file two flightplans, one for the VFR portion and the other for the IFR portion. So if you file A to B to C and A to B is VFR followed by B to C as IFR, the briefer will file a VFR flightplan A to B and an IFR flightplan for B to C. AIM 5-1-7 explains what the pilot is expected to do.
