Ace Base Grace question

In January 2013 I did an initial type-rating on a multi-crew jet aircraft.  In December 2013 I did a recurrent and again in December 2014.  In other words, I did my recurrent in my 'Ace' month - meaning my 'Base' month is still January.  Can  I legally fly until the end of January or the end of February 2016...!  Thankyou for your responses

This answer is for a 61.58 check.

Under what you described your base month is considered January. You can fly the jet till the end of January. Your late grace month is February. If you have not taken a proficiency check by the end of January you cannot act as the pilot in command till one is accomplished.

There is debate on whether you can fly as the pilot in command in your late grace month but 61.58(a)(1) states previous 12 months. So I say no.

If you get a proficiency check done in February then your check will expire at the end of January. The grace months is a way for you to get the training done when it’s convenient to you in December or January without having to move up the training in subsequent years. It is also a way for the FAA to stop the 13 month proficiency check by pilots getting checked on the first day of next month thus moving training back in subsequent years.

    See the Hoy legal interpretation:

According to the letter, you may act as PIC in February under your scenario, but it does not establish a new base month.
