RNAV SID Note

Asked by: 3712 views Aircraft Systems, FAA Regulations

Reference: (KATL) DAWGS EIGHT SID Why the note "radar required for non-GPS aircraft"? I ask because you need GPS or another form of RNAV (DME/ DME or IRU) to fly this procedure. If the aircraft is properly equipped then one can navigate this procedure without radar since the waypoints will be visible in the navigators (GPS for example) database.   Thanks for the feedback.

    Dan,

FAA order 8260.46E is the FAA guidance for DP’s. It states:

    (5) Except as required by paragraph 2-1-1f(3), all “RNAV 1” DPs that are annotated “DME/DME/IRU or GPS REQUIRED” must be annotated with the note: “RADAR REQUIRED FOR NON-GPS EQUIPPED AIRCRAFT.”

Paragraph 2-1-1 (f)(3) provides for the requirement for Radar Vectors to join a portion of a SID, in which case even GPS equipped aircraft would have the note “Radar required”.

I am guessing the note is needed because the DME-DME and DME-DME-IRU systems do not have reception of the required DME stations to determine a fix at low altitude as the aircraft departs the runway and therefor needs radar to assist with this portion of the DP.

Yes, the typical reason for this note is that the procedure has failed what is called a “DME/DME Assessment”. In order for DME/DME RNAV to provide acceptable position accuracy, the configuration and number of DME sources has to meet certain parameters. Each segment is evaluated, so sometimes you will see notes like “GPS required for XXX transition” where just that transition failed the DME/DME evaluation.
