Uncontrolled VFR Clearance Delivery

Asked by: 2907 views Airspace, FAA Regulations, General Aviation, Private Pilot

Sunday I will be flying out of East Kansas City 3GV on a nw route back to Nebraska. 3GV is a ways outside of Kansas Citys airspace but I feel comfortable with them knowing im there. Is it proper procedure to get VFR clearance delivery in this situation? Im going to request flight following once im in the air. I was wondering if I could ask for a squak code and possibly flight following from clearance before I take off. Or is is more proper procedure to get a code and request FF from departure once im in the air?

Remote CD channels are pretty standard fare at nontowered airports around Class B airspace because of a perceived need for a simplified method of obtaining IFR clearances. I know there are people who have and there may be some airspace where it’s standard procedure, but I can say that in more than 20 years of flying, I have never asked for a VFR squawk code by calling a remote clearance delivery channel.

I think you have more than enough time to depart and call for Flight Following.

The CD frequency at 3GV rings a line in the same radar room at KC approach that you’ll be calling on 118.4 when you take off. You could call ahead and pick up your squawk code but as Matt said it’s just as easy to get it in the air. I fly in that airspace all the time, you’ll have no problem with the approach controller getting you set up with flight following if you call them in the air.
