Vibrations/ loss of power on piston engine

Asked by: 3709 views Aircraft Systems

I fly piston aircraft installed with Lycoming IO-540-V4A5. I experienced engine vibrations followed by loss of power (subsequently engine failure with in 3-5 seconds). All the parts of engine were found SAT (no damage), except that there were marks of detonation/ pre-ignition in the cylinders/pistons. The engine was operated well with in the limits . What all could be the possible causes for this incident.

Sounds like a question for your IA, not a CFI.

Was the mixture full rich? Is the engine driven fuel pump working? Boost pump? What airframe was it on? After a complete engine teardown no parts were found to be damaged?

mixture was put to rich approx 1 minute prior to the incident. Aux fuel pump was on. engine driven fuel pump was found sat. the aircraft is super mushshak.
