Are you required to fly a heading for the PT outbound on a full approach or can you track it outbound?

I would normally track the OB course for a PT using the charted barb. However, one can make the course reversal as long as they conduct it on the same side as the PT is charted and within the charted PT limit, typically within 10 NM. Some will use a 90/270 or 80/260 degree back to back turns, or a holding pattern to perform the course reversal. With either of these methods, the OB leg is a DR heading.

Note that the charted OB direction is a course and not a heading.

You are required to remain in protected airspace and make the turn on the barbed side. That is the one and only requirement when doing a barbed PT. Period.

How you accomplish that is 100% up to you.
