Logging IFR as XC

Asked by: 2648 views , , , ,
FAA Regulations, General Aviation, Instrument Rating

To determine whether an instrument flight counts as a cross country, do you consider if it is at least a 50nm straight line distance, or do you consider total flight distance along airways? Example: an instrument rated pilot files and flies an IFR flight from airport A to airport B only 48 nm away, but which totals over 50nm along airways.

    61.1 is pretty clear.

To count towards an instrument rating in an airplane, it needs to be 50 NM straight line distance.

To count for a helicopter, it needs to be 25 NM straight line distance.
