FAR/ AIM

Asked by: 4010 views FAA Regulations

What is the legal effective begin date and end date for the FAR/AIM?

EXAMPLE:  The FAR/ AIM I have (ASA reprint version) cover is 2014 edition. The inside cover says "contains current regulations as of July 25, 2013". I was expecting to also see an end date to signify when the 2014 version ends but is not found of which would logically signify when the 2015 FAR/ AIM language is effective.

I also see the 2015 FAR/ AIM is available for purchase. But on which date do the contents of the 2015 edition become effective?

Thanks for the feedback.

The dates of publication are included in the AIM on the first page under the title of “Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) Basic Flight Information and ATC Procedures”.It includes the the change number, cutoff date, and publication date. The Basic manual is published every two years with three updates in between.

General advisory warning: the paperback reprint of the “2014” FAR/AIM or AIM/FAR or whatever the publisher chooses to call it is most likely out-of date when you buy it.

As John said, the AIM is published – by the FAA, not ASA – on a scheduled basis with with periodic updates. On top of that, AIM changes can also be the subject of NOTAM.

The FAA’s online AIM is generally the most up-to date (but may still be the subject of NOTAM). It is available at https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/aim/index.htm. If you click on the link, note that the latest change was 2 weeks ago. Any chance your paperback has it?

Follow-up: I’m all excited! The new ASA printed 2015 FAR/AIM is out and, Lo! and behold! it has the July 24 update!

Of course, by the time we reach the year on the cover… 😀
