New ATP Rule

Asked by: 4309 views FAA Regulations

What are the course contents for the 30 hours of ground time required for ATP cert.?

Who is certified to teach this?

Will a regional airline provide this training so you can obtain ATP sponsored by the airline?

I am asking for future planning purposes and remain hopeful to one day obtain this rating.

Thank you for the feedback.

    Information pertaining to the training requirements are found in FAR §61.156.

    ———————-
    (a) Academic training. The applicant for the knowledge test must receive at least 30 hours of classroom instruction that includes the following:

    (1) At least 8 hours of instruction on aerodynamics including high altitude operations;
    (2) At least 2 hours of instruction on meteorology, including adverse weather phenomena and weather detection systems; and
    (3) At least 14 hours of instruction on air carrier operations, including the following areas:

    (i) Physiology;
    (ii) Communications;
    (iii) Checklist philosophy;
    (iv) Operational control;
    (v) Minimum equipment list/configuration deviation list;
    (vi) Ground operations;
    (vii) Turbine engines;
    (viii) Transport category aircraft performance;
    (ix) Automation, navigation, and flight path warning systems.

    (4) At least 6 hours of instruction on leadership, professional development, crew resource management, and safety culture.

    —————————–
    As of this date, I am unaware of any training center or Part 141 school that offers this specialized training. I would imagine most training centers (Part 142) are developing a course that specifically deals with this new requirement.

    I don’t know if a regional airline would provide this training or not and I wouldn’t be surprised if some did and others did not. Best to ask each individual airline.

    Not to hijack the thread but every time I see these courses listed out on a board it reminds me of most the areas that were covered in the aviation program I attended in college. Will there be any credit given for college classes like there was as far as the hours were concerned?

    Probably not Sterlin. The FAA is pretty specific about what it wants (See AC 61-138 Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Program) and I think it unlikely prior courses will be retroactively brought into the program.

    The only thing I think is there is the use of prior or alternate training to reduce the requirements, but that results in a “restricted” ATP – see FAR 61.160. Even then, the FAA needs to approve the program for that purpose. ALPA has
    a list of those programs and a pretty decent discussion of the rules with links to related materials.

    The regionals I am aware of are giving this training to new hires. They will not have a choice if they want to attract pilots.
