i don’t know about Canada, but if you want a job as a pilot under the FAA’s jurisdiction, there’s precious little available until you get at least your Commercial certificate. Add to that the restrictions if you don’t have your Instrument endorsement, you probably want all three, depending upon your desired flight job. Short answer: you’re going to be sorely disappointed if you think you can make a living using aircraft with just a Private certificate.

There is nothing in between private and commercial if you want to do it that way. Check the regs, probably part 61, to see commercial requirements.
The best ways that I can think of for getting the hours for commercial without incurring a great deal of debt are A) buy a share in a plane and share the expenses B) find an aviation related job with someone who will trade you cheap/free hours in a trainer for work.
Outside of that getting 250 hours at $100-200 an hour is going to be tough for most people.

I only have a private pilot license (I’m based in Canada), but I know that, as per CAR 401.28 http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-96-433/page-82.html (the Canadian Aviation Regulations are the equivalent of the US FARs), you pretty much can’t make a profit with a PPL.
