Should I make lesson plans for FOI

Hi,  I am preparing lesson plans for the CFI-A and I was wondering whether I should make lesson plans for the FOI, or should I just study the FOI material from the textbook?

Thank You,

Marek

If you’re comfortable building these extra lesson plans I would suggest going ahead and completing them, but if you decide not to it’s not bad. You will be asked about various aspects regarding the different types of learning (and lots of other stuff) on your oral exam and as long as you know what you’re talking about all will be well. If anything is shaky or you don’t fully understand the concepts I would advise you to make the plans in order to help reinforce the learning that you’ve done up to this point and cement it your mind.

I never made lesson plans for these and it was never mentioned by any examiners nor did I have any problem teaching any level of student while I was still active.

Do it. I did and it helped out A LOT. Structure your lesson plans based on the Aviation Instructor’s Handbook as the PTS goes right in order through that book. If anything, this is going to help reinforce FOI’s when it comes time to explain them on the test.

I made all of my lesson plans for everything, even hydroplaning, and when I got to the oral, the examiner said “put those away” and didn’t get a single chance to even eyeball my plans.

You need to have “instructional” knowledge because technically you can teach a candidate for ground instructor cerificates the FOI’s needed to pass the FOI exam as a potential CFI. But questions you’ll get are like “tell me ways to help motivate a student with examples”.

So short answer, Yes, make them. Overprepare as much as you can. My CFI instructor told me “Over preparing for this exam is like taking life jackets on an over water flight. You probably won’t need it, but it’s a pretty damn good idea to not leave without it”.
