Need to renew CFI Certification during the Government Shutdown

Asked by: 4303 views FAA Regulations

Hi. My CFI certification expires at the end of October. With the government shutdown (including my local FSDO at KAFW), what are my options to renew the certificate prior to its expiration? I have the necessary 5 students with 80% pass rate to renew my certificate. But how can I get it to the FAA? If the government is still shut down after October, I would assume I'm no longer a CFI. Which would mean another FAA checkride to renew. I can't imagine the government making exceptions, even though they caused the mess in the first place. If I take an online refresher course, will it still renew the cert even though the FAA is not operating? Thanks.

If you submit the 8710 before the end of October you should be ok. By submitting I mean the ACR has signed the IACRA application and submitted it to the FAA electronically. It would also work with a paper 8710.

Take an online course that you know will submit an IACRA application.

Or you could submit your paperwork to a DPE authorized to do Flight Instructor renewals. He should be able to renew you either with a paper 8710-1 or IACRA.
